What are the requirements for a ‘UK ‘ancestry’ visa?

  • You are a Commonwealth citizen; and
  • You are 17 year old or over; and
  • You are able to provide proof that one of your grandparents was born in the UK and Islands (the Islands include the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) or, in the Republic of Ireland before 31 March 1922; and
  • You are able to work and intend to take or seek employment in the UK; and
  • You will be able to support and accommodate yourself and any dependants adequately, without need of help from public funds.


Documents Required
You will have to show there is a legitimate line of descent from the grandparent to you, so you will need your grandparent’s birth and marriage certificates, your parent’s birth and marriage certificates as well as your own. Adoptive relationships can qualify under the rule, but you will need proper documentation to demonstrate the relationship. For more information see the Home Office website.

Do I need a visa (Entry Clearance) in order to come to the UK?
To enter the UK under the category of ‘UK Ancestry’, you must always apply for entry clearance first.

How long will I be able to stay with this visa?
You will be allowed to stay for up to 4 years.

Do I need a work permit in order to work?
No. This is not required.

Does it matter if I am aged 65 or over?
If you are 65 years old or over, your application is most likely to be refused as you cannot be considered as ‘able to work’.

If I have a visa for less than four years, can I get it extended?
If you were granted entry clearance, on the ground of UK ancestry, for less than four years, you may apply for an extension to the full period without having to leave the UK.

An application for an extension should be made on Form FLR(O).
